What is Vinyasa Flow Yoga?

“Vinyasa” is derived from the Sanskrit term nyasa, which means “to place,” and the prefix vi, “in a special way”—as in the arrangement of notes in a raga, the steps along a path to the top of a mountain, or the linking of one asana to the next. (Yoga Journal)

Flow is a style that asks students to align movement and breathing while flowing through a set of specific asanas. At BYUV Flow is based on the Baptiste Power Yoga series, Journey into Power created by Baron Baptiste.

The 5 Pillars of Baptiste Power Vinyasa

  • Drishti (Sight)
      • Focus your sight outward to reflect inward.
  • Ujjayi (Breath)
      • Ujjayi breathing slows down the breath to keep it powerful and focused during challenging postures. Keeping the breath slow and deep helps students stay relaxed, calm, and centered.
  • Bandhas (Core)
      • In Baptiste Yoga, Bandhas are also known as “body locks” and are often referred to as “Core, Hands, and Feet”. Bandhas helps support students in their practice by engaging the core for balance and strength.
  • Tapas (Heat)
      • In flow classes, the room is kept between 90 and 95 degrees. The heat enables students to get out of their comfort zone and melt away layers of mental tension to focus on being in the moment.
  • Vinyasa (Flow)
    • This refers to the intentional flowing of one pose to the next while focussing on our breathing and our foundation.
