Unsung Troublemakers of the Upper Body
Your rib cage and shoulder blades are the quiet drivers of how your upper body feels and functions. They’re meant to move, expand, rotate, and glide with every breath and every reach. For most people, though, they’re locked up, over-braced, or simply ignored. This may result in shortness of breath, back pain between the shoulder blades, pain in the left or right shoulder blade, and even difficulty breathing while lying down.
The consequences add up quickly. When your rib cage can’t move well, your breathing turns shallow and your spine gets stiff. When your shoulder blades don’t glide the way they should, your shoulders, neck, and even elbows end up doing work that isn’t theirs. That “tight shoulders” feeling so many people try to stretch away? It’s often not a shoulder problem at all. It’s a rib cage and shoulder blade problem in disguise.
Why We Build It Into Everything
At our studio, these areas are never an afterthought. They’re woven into every class we teach.
In yoga, the goal isn’t just hitting shapes. It’s how you breathe and move through them. Twists, side bends, and transitions become chances to actually access your rib cage and scaps rather than just going through the motions.
In mobility classes (Kinstretch/Strictly Strength), we get more specific (and yes, a little nerdy). We use movement patterns that teach your shoulder blades to glide on your rib cage without compensation. The work is controlled and intentional, and it can feel subtle, but it goes deep.
In strength training, it all gets tested. If your rib cage flares all over the place or your shoulder blades are just along for the ride, your lifts will show it fast. Pressing, pulling, and carrying all depend on a stable, responsive base.
The Big Picture
By carrying these ideas across yoga, mobility, and weights, we’re not just chasing flexibility. We’re building bodies that actually know how to move: strong, mobile, and a little harder to break.
