May is Mental Health Month! We already know that exercise is good us, we feel it after a walk, a yoga class, or a sweaty HIIT session. But did you know that exercise can also boost your overall mood, improve your sleep, and help you deal with depression, anxiety, and stress? In clinical studies, scientists have seen that exercise is a powerful depression fighter (for mild to moderate cases) because it promotes changes in the brain including neural growth, reduced inflammation and new activity patterns. Exercise also releases those feel-good endorphins and can put a pause on the negative thoughts that feed depression. At the Studio, we’ve found that working out in a community creates a strong social network which is associated with mental well-being and longevity.
We’re celebrating all the MAMAS this month too. All you moms out there showing up and working hard- in and out of the Studio- we see you, we love you! Join us for snacks after any class on Saturday, May 9th.
HIPS don’t lie…they tell us so much about our bodies and our mobility. As a rotational joint, the hip is imperative to movement from the foundation of a stride to the depth of a squat. Learn more about YOUR hips and how they move in Kinstretch and Yoga this month.
Our core value for May is RESPECT. At the Studio, we cultivate mutual respect by starting and ending classes on time, supporting all students from 1st timers to your one thousandth class, as well as being up front and transparent about our pricing and policies. To keep our spot a fun & enjoyable we ask that students show up with mutual respect in mind; that includes signing up for classes ahead of time, canceling when you can’t make it, and always treating staff with kindness & consideration.
CORE VALUE: RESPECT

Respect is one of our 5 Core Values: Creating an environment where people both honor their body and their unique needs while protecting and valuing our shared space and the needs of others.
The meaning of respect in its simplest form is; a feeling or expression of admiration or regard for something or someone. Our policies & practices at the Studio are embedded in mutual respect. They help sail this ship smoothly and make our little studio a spot where people feel seen and welcome.
Here are a few of our policies:
- Sign up for class! Cancel if you can’t make it.
- Bringing a guest? Ask them to complete the account creation and liability form before arriving at the Studio if they can. Don’t know how to sign up a guest? Ask us! We’d be happy to help
- Need to leave a class early? We know that sometimes busy schedules mean that things gotta happen back to back. Leaving early is not ideal but if you have to go before we close out class, let your teacher know, leave your equipment, roll up you mat and exit quietly. Your workout buddies appreciate it!
- Please store any items that are not necessary for class in a cubby or shelf in the locker rooms. Coats and shoes can be left in the lobby. Please no phones, gum or food in the hot room.
- Got questions? Our front desk is here to help. Email us at thestudiouv.com with your inquiries.
FRC FOCUS: HIPS

Let’s talk about those hippies! Happy hips move in all directions from flexion & extension, internal & external rotation, to adduction & abduction. They’re a powerhouse joint that enable the body to do everything from stand to squat to dance! This month, find out what you got for hip mobility and apply what you learn to all your other activities. Try these Hip CARs at home to get things rolling and join us for some hip lovin’ in classes this month.
MENTAL HEALTH MONTH
We’ve got a few tips for ya on how to maximize your workout AND boost your mental health:
Hydration- Drink water before you get to class! Starting out in the heat with adequate hydration means you’re ready to sweat and will have you feeling better after your session. Keep drinking water throughout the day, and consider adding an electrolyte to your water post class.
Nutrition– Eat foods that are as close to source as possible (minimal processing). Eat 3 meals a day with mostly veggies, protein and carbs. Add in healthy snacks like fruit, nuts, yogurt. Under-eating results in high cortisol levels and depletes your energy. You need fuel to power your body so it can do the work!
Light & Dark Exposure– Morning sunlight (low solar angle) or artificial light as early as possible for 10 minutes. Darkness for 6-8 hours/night for circadian rhythm.
Sleep– 6-8 hours a night of quality sleep; give yourself a wind down period, try to go to sleep at about the same time every night (within +/- 1 hr) without a screen.
Social Connection- Regular social connections that elevate mood (group fitness!)
Modulating Stress- Breath work, meditation, non-sleep deep rest (NSDR) are tools that can be effective at calming the body and mind
